Based on available information, the image is a vintage advertisement poster for “La Bière Phénix,” a French beer brand associated with the Brasserie du Phénix, founded in 1886 in Marseille, France. The poster likely dates to the 1930s or 1940s, with some sources suggesting around 1935 as a specific year for similar designs featuring a sailor or waiter, which aligns with the style seen here.
The image is most commonly attributed to Leon Dupin, a notable French illustrator active during this period, known for his work on beer advertisements, including a 1930 poster for Biere Phenix depicting a sailor. The design reflects influences from the Art Deco school, characterized by bold lines, vibrant colors, and a sense of movement, which were popular in European advertising during that time.
However, without a confirmed signature, it can be said that it belongs to the French school of modernist advertising posters, very close to the late Art Deco movement and post-war commercial graphic design.
Hervé Morvan and Jean D’Ylen, who worked with caricatured figures, cheerful tones and dynamic movement, are other illustrators of the period to whom this work can also be attributed.
The context
Vintage advertising posters, such as those promoting classic brands of beer, bring a unique charm and character to commercial spaces. Their bold colours, playful illustrations and distinctive typography instantly evoke a sense of nostalgia, while also adding visual warmth and personality. Because they reflect a particular cultural moment, they can spark curiosity and conversation among customers, creating a welcoming and memorable atmosphere. Displaying these posters in cafés, bars, restaurants, or retail shops not only enhances the décor but also communicates a sense of heritage and authenticity, qualities that many clients value today.

With access to a wide collection of these vintage pieces, they can be carefully selected to match different settings, extending their appeal beyond hospitality into areas such as fashion-oriented spaces, where their timeless aesthetic and cultural resonance provide a stylish backdrop that complements contemporary design.
