Mikuláš Galanda
Mikuláš Galanda (May 4, 1895 – June 5, 1938) was a Slovak painter and illustrator. Born in Mala Vieska near Turčianske Teplice (then part of the Kingdom of Hungary), he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and later at the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague under notable professors such as V. H. Brunner, August Brömse, and Franz Thiele.
Galanda played a significant role in shaping Slovak modernism by integrating European artistic movements like expressionism and cubism into his work while remaining deeply rooted in Slovak themes. His art was characterized by vibrant colors, dynamic compositions, and emotional depth.
Throughout his career, Galanda exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale (1936), Moscow (1937), and the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris (1937), where he won a Silver Medal.
About this work
Pred Zrkadlom” (In Front of a Mirror), painted by Mikuláš Galanda between 1936 and 1937, depicts a woman with her face painted red, her breasts exposed, standing in front of a mirror. The artwork captures an intimate and sensual moment, blending vulnerability with introspection.
This painting reflects Galanda’s modernist approach, influenced by expressionism and cubism, evident in the simplified shapes and bold use of color. It also incorporates symbolic elements, emphasizing emotional depth and the exploration of femininity within Slovak artistic modernism.

The theme of women was a recurring subject in Mikuláš Galanda’s works. This focus stemmed from his admiration for femininity, beauty, love, and motherhood, which he viewed as central to human existence.
Galanda often depicted women in various stages of life, from youth to maturity, emphasizing their emotional and symbolic significance. His works were inspired by both personal happiness and broader cultural themes, blending Slovak motifs with modernist aesthetics.
Note – This reproduction is printed on 400gsm 100% cotton canvas, identical to what painters use, so it resembles an original work of art. The prints are made using the Giclée process, which creates gallery-quality works.
