Paul Klee

Paul Klee, born in 1879 in Switzerland but of German nationality, was a painter, draughtsman, poet and teacher. His highly individual style was influenced by artistic movements including expressionism, cubism and surrealism.
Klee is considered one of the main and most vigorous artists of Modernism and the entire 20th century, with a production that incorporated various styles over time, while maintaining an experimentalist stance.

About this work

Paul Klee’s Mit den zwei Verlorenen (With the Two Lost Ones) from 1938 is an example of his late-period work, created during a time of personal and political turmoil. The painting reflects Klee’s characteristic abstract style, blending geometric shapes and muted colors to evoke a sense of melancholy and introspection. The composition features angular forms and subtle contrasts between shades of blue and orange, which contribute to its emotional depth.

The title, With the Two Lost Ones, suggests themes of loss and separation, possibly reflecting Klee’s own struggles during this period, including his deteriorating health and the rise of fascism in Europe. As with many of his works, Klee employs symbolic abstraction to communicate universal human experiences rather than literal representation.

His ability to balance simplicity with profound meaning makes this piece particularly resonant. This painting exemplifies Klee’s mastery in merging form, color, and symbolism, creating an artwork that invites viewers to interpret its emotional and existential undertones.

Note – This reproduction is printed on 400gsm 100% cotton canvas, identical to what painters use, so it resembles an original work of art. The prints are made using the Giclée process, which creates gallery-quality works.
