Amadeo de Souza Cardoso
Amadeo was born in 1887 near Porto to a family of wealthy landowners. He studied architecture at the Lisbon Academy of Fine Arts. He left for Paris in 1906, when he was 19. In 1911, Amadeo settled near the Quai d’Orsay, in the rue du Colonel Combes. In October, he held an exhibition there with Modigliani. His painting was linked to movements such as Cubism, Futurism and Expressionism. He died abruptly in 1918 at the age of 30, interrupting a brilliant and restless career, a victim of the pneumonia epidemic that broke out that year.
About this work
Amadeo de Souza Cardoso’s painting A Mulher (or La Dame) is a notable example of his modernist approach, created in 1913. This work embodies his exploration of abstraction and symbolism, blending influences from Cubism, Futurism, and Expressionism. The painting features bold colours and dynamic forms, reflecting Souza Cardoso’s interest in breaking away from traditional representational art to focus on emotional and conceptual expression.

The title, often translated as The Carnation Girl, suggests a connection to femininity and nature, possibly symbolising vitality or beauty. Souza Cardoso’s work frequently sought to evoke feelings and ideas through unconventional compositions, aiming to challenge viewers’ perceptions and engage them in the artistic dialogue of modernism.
Note – This reproduction is printed on 400gsm 100% cotton canvas, identical to what painters use, so it resembles an original work of art. The prints are made using the Giclée process, which creates gallery-quality works.
