Piet Mondrian
Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was a Dutch painter and a crucial figure in the development of abstract art. Born in Amersfoort, Netherlands, he initially painted landscapes in a traditional style before gradually moving towards abstraction. Influenced by Cubism, Mondrian developed his own unique style called Neo-Plasticism (De Stijl). This style is characterized by the use of basic geometric elements – straight horizontal and vertical black lines and the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) on a white background.
Mondrian believed his abstract style could express universal harmony and spiritual order. He lived and worked in the Netherlands, Paris, London, and finally New York, where his later work became more dynamic with the introduction of coloured lines. Despite moderate success during his lifetime, his reputation grew significantly after his death. Today, Piet Mondrian is recognised as one of the most important pioneers of 20th-century abstract art, and his iconic grid compositions remain highly influential in art, design, and popular culture.
Über dieses Werk
This painting was done around 1911, when Mondrian was about 40 years old. It depicts a still life with a ginger pot, common in European homes at the time, flanked by other household objects such as bottles and plates. Mondrian uses a restrained palette, with dark tones and striking contrasts of light and shadow.
The forms are simplified, almost fragmented, which shows the influence of Cubism (in particular, that of Picasso and Braque). The colours are more subdued than those preferred in his later phases. One can already note a concern with the internal structure of the composition – the interplay of lines, planes, and volume is very deliberate.
